Recently, the New York State Theater Institute, or NYSTI, had to drop its final curtain at Russell Sage College, but as our Vince Gallagher reports, there's a new theatrical company that just happens to be up and running with a new show.

TROY, N.Y. -- Seussical, also known as Seussical the Musical, was a Broadway show, and now it's on stage at the Russell Sage College in Troy, put on by the students themselves from the newly formed Theater Institute.

"This is a creative performance of the creative arts department, but certainly a great opportunity for the students to get some experience in educational theatre,” said Sara Melita, Sage College Teaching Artist in Residence.

Today's performance was a matinee for kids, but it's really for all ages.

"Here we are doing these school performances, and I guess I can't express enough how awesome it is to do these shows for young kids because they just appreciate it so much and the adults too,” said Amanda Vogue.

"You really need to sort of do it all, especially for this show; it's so high energy, it's all about the singing and dancing and razz ma tazz,” said Sarah Bitely, Russell Sage graduate.

Suessical the Musical may be energetic and colorful production, but here at Russell Sage College, it has the distinction of being something else; the first theatrical show since the closing of the New York State Theater Institute.

"This is Sage's effort to try and continue the mission of NYSTI, the big difference being that NYSTI also had a full professional company doing entirely separate shows,” said David Bunce, Theater Institute Co-Administrator.

"I attended NYSTI summer camps and it was really an outlet for me and it was very important for me and I'm just really glad to be able to spread that to anyone, even NYSTI isn't here anymore, but to pass it along and keep it going, it's really important,” said Bitely.

And isn't exactly replacing NSYSTI, for now at least the show goes on

"I think this is a sensational performance, it's right up there with the performances that NYSTI has been known to produce,” said Melita.

This is new for Sage, but because it's the Theater Institute, which is a takeoff of NYSTI, we'll see how it goes, but so far, it's been going really well.
