BUFFALO, N.Y. — A high school student was recognized by the Erie County Legislature on Thursday for his part in helping earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.

Canisius High School senior Nick Sam organized a seven-month fundraising effort called Hope for Japan.

Sam and his classmates raised $22,000 to benefit victims affected by the March disasters.

Canisius students sold 5,500 Hope for Japan wristbands to help raise the money.

"I had a lot of other family members over there that were affected and displaced. Their homes were completely destroyed and everything, so we decided that we weren't going to let the ones who died die in vain and so we were going to make something happen,” said Nick.

The fundraising effort spread to more than 20 schools throughout Western New York. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
