Ankle sprains are the most common joint injury, often caused by sports. In this edition of Healthy Living, Marcie Fraser takes a closer look at the injury.
Twisted ankles are commone in most sports. However, it’s important to know the difference between sprains and strains.
According to Dr. David Dixon, an orthopedic surgeon, the difference is the grade of the injury.
“Grade one sprain is a gentle stretch, it is not any tearing of the ligament, and grade two you get a partial tearing of the ligament, and grade three is a full tear of that ligament,” explained Dr. Dixon.
The worse the injury is, the worse the symptoms are.
"Generally there is ecchymosis and bruising with any type of sprain because there is an injury of the soft tissue,” said Dr. Dixon.
For most sprains and strains the treatment is the same.
Dr. Dixon said, “Rest, compression, and elevation, the RICE of acute treatment. When you injure an area, you are injuring tissues, and your body creates an inflammation response which increases the blood flow to the area, and that can increase the swelling, ecchymosis and pain."
If you are considered a chronic sprainer, things could get much worse if you don’t see a doctor.
"Every time you injure that ankle, or sprain that ankle multiple times, you are increasing the risk for arthritic change in that joint,” said Dr. Dixon.
Even if you think your twisted ankle is nothing to be worried about, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Dr. Dixon said, “We get an X-ray, we look at the bones, we can see whether or not there is a fracture right away, and that is why any sprain that swells. You should have an X-ray to rule out a fracture.”
