Fans of the Olympics don’t have to travel to Russia to get into the Olympic spirit. In this weeks’ travel report, Valarie D'Elia takes a look at a “Gold Medal Getaway” in nearby Lake Placid.
The Olympic spirit is always alive and well in Lake Placid, a winter Olympics host city both in 1932 and 1980.
Now, there’s even more excitement building in anticipation of the Sochi games a half a world away.
“The Lake Placid region is the only region in the entire country that has sent at least one athlete to every Olympic Games, dating back to 1924 in Chamonix, France,” said Jon Lundin, spokesperson for the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority.
If you’re looking for a gold medal getaway, you don’t have to scramble around for a visa and expensive tickets to Sochi when you can buy a $32 Olympic passport in Lake Placid.
“For one low price you can really experience, what Lake Placid has to offer and really feel immersed,” said Lundin.
“It’s so cool because of all the history here, we went in the museum yesterday, so much history, such a great place, I love it,” said one young attendee.
“And we did a lot of fun stuff like the bobsled run and ice skating in the Olympic complex,” said his twin brother.
The passport includes admission to the Lake Placid Olympic Center, where Team USA upset the Soviet Union in the “Miracle on Ice” hockey game, and free ice skating at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, the same 400 meter Olympic track where Eric Heiden skated to five gold medals.
For a real thrill, get 20 percent off both the Bobsled and Skeleton rides at the Olympic Sports complex.
If you want to wear your pride on your sleeve, take a walk down Main Street and duck into the USA Hockey Store, for official Sochi memorabilia.
Lake Placid apparently brings out the competitive spirit in everyone, especially our New York State twins.
When asked who is older, the older twin said, “Me! By one minute!”
One minute by Olympic standards could easily be the difference between a Silver and a Gold.
