A popular local radio personality has died. Harry Downey was known on the Capital Region's WGY radio for his resonating voice and easy manner.
Downey's companion, Nancy Veeder said he died peacefully at his home in Stuart, Florida Friday morning. She said he had kidney failure a year ago and was on dialysis.
Many of you may remember Downey's Grand Union cooking show, where he would give a recipe and callers would try to guess what the recipe was.
Joe Gallagher of WGY radio had nothing but praise for Harry Downey.
He said, "When he walked into a room with that voice, and his personality, and the way he looked, he commanded the attention. He was always the center of attention. He knew everybody and many people knew Harry Downey. He was truly one of the great radio legends."
Services will be held next week in Florida and a memorial service will be held in August in Malta.
Downie also did ski reports and Saratoga Race Course track reports for Star 101.3 FM as recently as last year.
