Opening arguments got underway Tuesday in the Devon Callicutt trial. Friends and family of Richard Bailey, the UAlbany student Callicutt is accused of killing, were in the courtroom to listen. Our Solomon Syed has been following the case and joined us with the latest details.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Devon Callicutt trial got off to a heated start. Friends and family of Richard Bailey, the UAlbany student Callicutt is accused of killing, were in the courtroom for the start of testimony.

In a rare move, the prosecutor objected to the defense attorney's opening statement. Defense attorney Cheryl Coleman said police targeted random black men during their investigation. She told the jury they won't be able to find Callicutt guilty beyond a reasonable doubt because of the motivations behind the testimony of the prosecutions key witnesses: King Modest and Ricardo Caldwell.

"There's more reasons for them to have um lied, falsified, exaggerated, combination of all of those things that you could shake a stick at," said Coleman.

During the course of the day, nine witnesses were called to the stand. Jurors heard the 911 tapes from that night, they also heard testimony from the woman who made that call.

One of Bailey's friends, Steven Mazziatti, also testified Tuesday. He watched Monday Night Football with Bailey the night that he died.

The trial will be staying put in Albany as Calicutt's motion for a change of venue was denied.
