Schenectady Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened Friday afternoon on Grove Place. Erin Vannella has more.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A Schenectady man was killed by police after they say he ignored officers' request to stop and reached for his weapon. It happened Friday afternoon on Grove Place.

Police say they responded to a 911 call of a man carrying a gun on State Street.

In a press conference, Police Commissioner Wayne Bennett says three officers responded to the scene. A 10 year veteran of the force tried to stop Luis Rivera, 32, but that Rivera refused to stop and ended up lifting his shirt, reaching for his gun and turning toward the officers.

It all happened on a busy street in broad daylight, leaving officers trying to piece together details of what happened.

All three officers are on administrative leave, but at this point, police say they believe the officers acted appropriately.

"At that point, when you decided your life is in danger, the way you're the threat renders that person harmless to your own safety," Bennett said.

Rivera died a short time later at Ellis Hospital.

The department and state police are launching an investigation into exactly what happened.

Bennett says the police are also reviewing the dashboard camera mounted in the police cars.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday afternoon
