Calls for peace in Schenectady come amid concerns about deadly violence in the city. As our Lori Chung reports, people took to the streets after the city's latest fatal shooting.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Step by step, concerned citizens from community groups take to the streets to call for an end to violence in Schenectady.

"What the stakeholder's mission is to come alongside of any victim or any person that's been part of a crime, or shooting or murder," said Pastor Richard Parsons of Consecration Church of God In Christ.

The march was held three months to the day after Luis Rivera was shot to death in a confrontation with police. His mother and other family members joined in as participants stepped off from the spot where Rivera was killed.

"We are looking out for the victim's rights and advocating for the victims of violent crimes" said Treasure Clayton, Project Hope President. "Mrs. Cederes, Rivera's mother, is one of those victims."

And, though this is an effort several weeks in the making, the walk still comes with ironic timing, just hours after a shooting claims the life of another man.

"It is a shame that there has been an incident on this day, and that this was a day that we chose to have our peace walk for safety" said Clayton.

Organizers say this showing is just the start of more initiatives to come. Among them, an effort to improve relations between police and the community. But, they say getting more of their neighbors on board will make for a strong start.
