SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Some positive light was shed on the SU men's basketball program Monday. Both major polls put the Orange at number one in the country.
SU beat George Washington convincingly over the weekend, while Kentucky and Ohio State in front of them took losses.
This is the first time SU has been at the top of the polls since the final week of the 2009-2010 regular season. It's also the first time in a couple of weeks the program has been making headlines for the right reasons.
The top spot in the country has students feeling better about their surroundings.
"It really makes me enjoy going here a lot more. The spirits are definitely a lot higher around campus. And it's really good to be ranked number one at a division one level because it really makes the school look good, gives the school some good publicity with everything going on with Bernie Fine right now," SU student Brandon Duplain said.
"I'm surprised for everybody involved that attitudes have been as good and in is in good morale as they have been considering everything that's been going on. And this is exactly what needed to happen, that people need to realize that this is the school. And the actions of one man do not reflect the entire program. And this is what comes of that, you know. It's about the basketball and not about the controversy,” SU student Evan Fonseca said.
Bernie Fine denies all allegations against him and no charges have been filed.
