Funeral services were held Tuesday for a couple killed after a man fleeing police hit their car and killed them. Friends and family gathered at Regina Coeli Church to remember Shawn and Patricia Wonderly. John Wagner has more.

HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Friends tell us Shawn and Patricia Wonderly were loving parents and they spent all their time investing in their two young kids. Those two, Abigail and Matthew, survived the horrific crash and are now in the arms of what seems to be a growing family.

"I like to believe these kids survived this accident for a reason," said Courtenay Caramico, friend of Patricia Wonderly.

An outpouring of support is headed toward two young children, orphaned in an instant, after their parents died when a car speeding through a red light, struck them while trying to flee the cops.

“It's going to take a while before they actually realize what happened, but they will have everything we can do for them and we'll try to keep this family together, said Paul Baxter, a co-worker of Shawn Wonderly.

The Wonderly family had just moved back to Poughkeepsie last week after spending a year in Florida. Shawn was headed to his old job working at ProTek.

"His smile, his joking about everything, always speaking about his children and his wife and his family," said Mike Dunning, a co-worker of Shawn Wonderly.

Caramico said, "I really admired them a lot. They were the kind of people that made me want to be a better mom."

Shawn's family set up a Facebook page and fund for the seven- and eight-year-old survivors and ProTek plans to raise money as well. Donations can be sent to this website or checks can be made out to Abigail and Matthew Wonderly
and sent to Kyle Wonderly, 6 Charlotte Rd., Fishkill, NY 12524.

The man who police say caused the crash, Ryan Floryan, 22, was wanted for a parole violation and two other warrants at the time of the accident. Questions remain as to when and why the police chase began and the speed of the vehicles.

"They're wonderful kids and their parents left them a great legacy of support and love and family, close knit family. I'm just very hopeful for their future." Caramico said.

At the funeral, the priest gave a message of hope in spite of tragic circumstances, hope for the two survivors’ future and hope that a community will surround them with the love and care they need to continue on.
