WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- As the debate continues over the future of the former St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet, the Albany diocese is offering to conduct another study on the building's structural integrity in response to residents who want the church saved.

The diocese has said the cost of renovating the church is far too high, but that it's willing to show community members it's looking into all options. The church was closed down last year during a round of church consolidations.

Nigro Companies has proposed to demolish the church and replace it with a Price Chopper Supermarket.

The group "Citizen's for St. Patrick" has been lobbying to save the building, citing its historical status.

Another public hearing on the Nigro proposal is set for Thursday the 23rd at the Watervliet Senior Citizen Center. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
