Police arrest 12 people Tuesday morning in connection with weapons, drug use and trafficking in the City of Amsterdam. As YNN's Maria Valvanis explains, the ages of those arrested range from teenagers up to 55 years old and even include an entire family.

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Amsterdam Police Chief Gregory Culick said, "Initially, we had some information on some gang information in the city that was starting to build a little more."

Five months later, the Amsterdam Police Department, with the help of a number of police agencies, executed five search warrants, leading to twelve city arrests. Five of those came from 68 and 70 Arnold Ave., where the Santos family lives. The mother, father and three children were all arrested.

"I won't speculate that every person in that family was involved in gang activity, but we have information to believe they were involved in drug activity," said Amsterdam Police Detective Lieutenant Kurt Conroy.

Conroy tells us this is the largest magnitude of search warrants the station has executed in one day that he can remember in his entire 20 years of service.

"During the service of the warrants, a quantity of heroin, cocaine, marijuana, two stolen hand guns, U.S. currency and several vehicles were seized from the five locations," said Chief Culick.

Police say they're expecting to make more arrests in the next few days.

Mayor Ann Thane said, "It's very important for the City of Amsterdam and our community to understand that we are on top of these issues, that we are aware through a network of community associations and tips and putting in overtime to make this possible."
