Millions got up early on Black Friday and were back out in search of deals for Small Business Saturday. As YNN's Matt Hunter reports, even after the crowds left many Saratoga Springs businesses still benefited from a boost in business.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Gone were the crowds of Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, but the early holiday shopping season rush continued Monday for downtown Saratoga merchants.
"We just have a lot of staff in the back packaging, bottling and packaging," said Hayley Miller, a manager at the Saratoga Olive Oil Company.
"I came in 10 minutes late to work and she's already hustling here filling boxes people ordered either last night or today on our website," said Paul O’Donnell, owner of Celtic Treasures.
For popular Broadway shops like the Saratoga Olive Oil Company and Celtic Treasures, Cyber Monday -- an eight-year-old tradition designed to boost online sales -- extends an already busy and profitable weekend.
Owners of both stores say they benefited from more than 20 times their normal online business.
"We really got hit hard with shipping all over the country and sometimes even abroad actually, which is really cool," Miller said.
"It provides a boost,” O’Donnell said. “We personally didn't promote our website for "Cyber Monday" but people just know we're there 24/7."
Local shops were hardly the only ones cashing in on Cyber Monday. For the third year in a row, analysts at the firm comScore expected it to be the busiest online shopping day of the year with an estimated $1.5 billion spent - a 20 percent increase from 2011.
With roughly a month to go until Christmas, few store owners are ready to tie a bow on the shopping season but most seem to agree it's off to a strong start.
"Knock wood, this year we're doing significantly better than last year," O’Donnell said.
"It's great for the business and great to see people happy and out and about, enjoying the product,” Miller said. “It's been really wonderful."
