NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Firefighters in the City of Newburgh held a pancake breakfast Sunday to help contribute to the ongoing Sandy relief efforts on Long Island.

Although the breakfast used to be an annual event, it stopped seven years ago and hasn't taken place since. But the firefighters decided to hold the breakfast this year to help out storm victims downstate.

While the planning for the event only just began in November, the turnout was remarkable.

Firefighters in Newburgh say it was their special connection to those on Long Island that led them to lend a helping hand.

"We have a special bond with the firemen down there because a lot of guys went to school together to be a fireman. These are people we know and their families and the people that they protect. So we know if it happened to us, they'd be coming up to help us out, so we still talk to them, we know what their status is at the time and what they need," said City of Newburgh firefighter Timothy Dexter.

Most of the food and supplies for the breakfast were donated.

The firefighters also took up a collection for canned goods, which will be brought downstate. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
