They raced through countries all over the world and now they're attracting thousands right here to their home in Schoharie County. Local celebrity couple known as “The Beekman Boys” were the announced winners of the CBS show "The Amazing Race" and as YNN's Maria Valvanis explains, employees at their Sharon Springs gift shop are struggling to keep up with all their new fans.
SHARON SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Beekman 1802 employee Maria Vought said, "I was elated."
And busy getting prepared.
"We had 48 orders in 15 minutes."
That all came after Beekman1802 Mercantile owners, Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, crossed the finish line first, becoming the official winners of the CBS show “The Amazing Race” and a one million dollar prize.
"Very excited for a whole bunch of reasons. Our wonderful little town is on the map now," said employee Michael Luby.
The pair is in New York City for the next few days wrapping things up with “The Amazing Race,” but their team back here is holding down the fort while their mercantile becomes more popular than ever.
"I have about 2,000 emails in my inbox this morning and the number just keeps going up and up," said employee Megan Holken.
The new fame is a win-win for the entire Sharon Springs community. The mercantile is filled with locally made goods and the orders keep coming and coming.
"Over 650 orders. When I heard about them winning, the phone started ringing off the hook," said Vought.
The Beekman Boys posted an extended thank you on their website. They say with their winnings, they plan to pay off their mortgage, invest in a new home for their mercantile and launch a food line, with 25 percent of its profits helping farmers pay off their debts.
Luby said, "They're so nice and so hard working, I posted on Facebook this morning, the good guys do win sometimes."
The local champions are expected home later this week.
