SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The shooting has also sparked a debate on gun control. In Saratoga, some residents are calling on local leaders to take a stand.

At Tuesday night's Saratoga Springs City Council meeting, several people, including city supervisor Joanne Yepsen, spoke on the topic of assault weapons.

They proposed ideas ranging from instituting a local gun buyback program, to cancelling next month's gun show in the city and banning assault weapons locally.

Because none of the proposals were on the agenda, they were not formally considered by members of the council, but there are those who believe there's growing support for serious changes.

"I think the bottom line is leaders of every community need to step up and represent their constituents' needs and fears and issues they feel are priorities and right now this is becoming a priority in our community," said Yepsen.

"It won't solve all of the problems by any stretch of the imagination but it's a start, it's an opportunity to get guns off the street," said Saratoga Springs resident Christopher Peake.

Organizers of next month's show were not at Tuesday night's meeting or immediately available for comment.
