More than 100 cats and two dogs were seized from a home in Schoharie County. Schoharie County Sheriff's deputies say the animals were living in deplorable conditions. Maria Valvanis has more.

SCHOHARIE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said, “Ninety-nine cats seized, two dogs, five cats and 62 kittens found in freezer in residence.”

All of those animals police say were found living in filthy conditions in a home on Route 146 in the Town of Wright. They belonged to a 50-year-old woman police have not identified or charged at this point.

“She had most living in cages. The rest were just running around her house,” Deputy Daniel Smith said.

The 99 cats found alive and one of the dogs were brought to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley. Three of them were so sick they had to be put down. Manager Kerrie Colin says it’s the worst case of animal neglect the shelter has ever seen.

Colin said, “There's a fine line between mental illness and animal abuse at some point, have to say, 100 animals in cages.”

Colin says people have already stopped by to donate kitty litter and even inquiring about adopting one of them.

“He was so cute and scared. I just fell in love with him,” Skylar Lagace said.

Police say the woman will likely face charges, but she has been cooperative and authorities did deem it safe to allow one of the dogs to be returned to her.
