GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- The government estimates by 2020, there will be 40 million licensed drivers age 65 and older. Car technicians say it's important to make sure older drivers' car fit them.
Events like "Car Fit" in Albany County is a chance for drivers to make sure things are still fitting appropriately. Technicians go through a 12 point checklist. They go over things like mirror placement, where the airbag is aimed and how seatbelts fit.
"The whole idea is to help them with the vehicle that they have. That's why these appointments are with the person's own vehicle and going through and making the adjustments on that vehicle. If there is a situation where it's just a poor fit and we can't make adequate adjustments, sometimes there are add on features, modifications we can do to a vehicle to help it fit better," said occupational therapist Donna Stressel.
Some of those modifications include extra mirrors or special seat cushions.
