KINDERHOOK, N.Y. -- New York Army National Guard soldiers, Kinderhook residents and school kids celebrated President Martin Van Buren's 231st birthday.

A wreath laying ceremony took place in his hometown of Kinderhook.

Van Buren was the eight president of the United States from 1837 to 1841.

"Martin Van Buren was very important,” said Peter Bujanow, a member of the Friends of Lindenwald, which is a non-profit organization that takes care of Van Buren’s former property. “He grew up here. This is his home. He went on and held many offices."

An interesting fact: The phrase we know as “OK” is actually derived from Van Buren's nickname "Old Kinderhook."
