After a slick morning commute, conditions are improving. YNN's Meredith Zaritheny has more on the messy Monday commute.

WALLKILL, N.Y. -- It was a messy morning commute across the Hudson Valley on Monday. Overnight, a mix of sleet and freezing rain fell, resulting in slippery roads, and school closures and delays.

"They're messy they’re horrible," said Wendy Vescosi, a commuter.

Ed Grosso, owner of Grosso Landscaping and Lawn Care, said, "They're slipping and sliding. Ice is ice, you can do nothing about it."

Roads and sidewalks across the region coated with a thin layer of ice as sleet and freezing rain continued to fall for much of the morning.

Grosso added, "Well it makes everything a lot harder because it's just a continuous circle, you go salt and do the sidewalks and scrape it off and you go back you keep hitting place to place to place."

Department of Transportation trucks were out in full force salting the roads-and crews were out plowing and breaking up ice on sidewalks.

"Throw salt and melt the ice first before shoveling it up," said Vaughn Herald, a landscaper.

Although the winter mix caused many school delays and closings, it didn't slow down businesses. Many people still had to make the Monday morning commute.

"Got to do what you got to do to pay the bills," said Peter Quinn, a driver.

"It took me about 40 minutes to defrost the whole vehicle and get everything off, I still have a lot of ice on there," said another driver.

"Go slow, just go slow that's it," suggested Steve Vought, another commuter.

Be on the look out for icy patches, and give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
