NATIONWIDE -One week after the deadly train derailment in the Bronx, Senator Chuck Schumer and other U.S. senators are pushing for more safety measures on commuter rails.
Schumer is calling for cameras to be installed inside the drivers' compartment. He says there should be one facing in, to see what the engineer is doing, and one facing out, to make sure the tracks and signals are working properly.
Schumer says the National Transportation Safety Board actually recommended these types of cameras after a crash in 2008, but it was never mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration.
Some changes have already been made. The Federal Railroad Administration has given emergency instructions to the MTA and Metro North to update the signal system to keep trains within speed limits. Until those are in place, two operators will be working each of the trains that travel through speed restricted zones.
