NEW YORK STATE -- In light of the bad weather in the area, the New York State police released a few simple safety reminders for this time of year.
They say to make sure you car is stocked with survival gear like blankets, a shovel, a flashlight with batteries, extra warm clothing, quick energy foods, jumper cables and tire chains if you have them.
When driving, leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Keep your gas tank as full as possible in the event that you are stranded or stuck in traffic. Keep your cell phone battery charged.
And most important of all, remember to drive slowly.
If you must travel, check your tires for quality tread and proper inflation.
Keep your cell phone with you whenever traveling. If you should become stranded, you will be able to call for help, advising rescuers of your location.
Make sure someone knows your travel plans and routes.
