BETHLEHEM, N.Y. — "There was a lady laying face down in the parking lot, and then I called 911," said a county waste worker.
He did not want to reveal his identity. He's still reeling from the discovery he made Thursday morning.
"I was horrified to see anything like that because I didn't know what had happened or what condition the lady was in," said the worker.
Police say what happened was a tragic accident. A Bethlehem woman in her 50s died from hypothermia. She was possibly trying to visit someone she knew at Woodhill Apartments.
"With the conditions, it wouldn't take long for anyone to be out. If someone had a medical problem, or if she tripped, fell, it wouldn't take long with these conditions," said Lt. Tom Heffernan of the Bethlehem Police Department.
Police say alcohol was a factor.
"It's an unforeseen accident and a tragedy today," said Heffernan.
He says the woman didn't live here but had been to this complex before. It's still unclear how long she was outside before she was found.
"At the end of the holiday and because it was cold, most people were staying inside for the night," said Heffernan.
