SPRAKERS, N.Y. -- Freshly back from the groomers, we got our first look at the Sprakers dogs since they were removed from a breeder's house on Tuesday.
The five shih-tzus are currently residing at the Montgomery County SPCA, while the 35 border collies are in the Oneonta area at a dog rescue.
Herbert Wiech, the owner of the dogs, voluntarily gave up the 40 animals after a public outcry at their living conditions. He is currently renovating his property and hopes to get some of the dogs back by the end of the month.
The SPCA says the dogs are adapting well, but will require more veterinary attention.
"They have medical issues. We have a couple with eye issues. They've only had a cursory examination, so they will be going in for a deeper examination," Jan Zumbolo, Montgomery County SPCA.
The Montgomery County SPCA is covering the costs of the vet bills for all the animals.
