ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- After a three month investigation into a series of copper burglaries, Ellenville Police arrested three men Thursday.
Marcus Coles, Tyler Joray, and Ruben Soto are charged with multiple counts of burglary.
Police say the three men stole copper from abandoned buildings, causing thousands of dollars of damage.
Officers received reports of over ten burglaries to vacant buildings involving copper thefts over the past couple of months.
Thursday night, they searched one of the suspect's homes, recovering stolen copper as well as tools for cutting it.
Ellenville's Police Chief says copper thefts are happening more often.
"We've been plagued by it for the last two months or so. It's become recently more of a problem for us and I think that goes for surrounding agencies as well. We're seeing a great deal of influx in these copper thefts. The price of copper $2.74 a pound, so that generates. These are different times and different reasons they are doing this," said Philip Mattracion, Ellenville Police Chief.
He says if you see any activity at an abandoned building, to call police.
