NEW YORK STATE -- A sergeant is sent to the hospital after being assaulted by an inmate at Coxsackie Correctional Facility.
Two officers were escorting Deon Williams, 22, back to his cell last Saturday when he stopped to talk to another inmate, and was told to keep walking officials say he then dropped his bag of personal items and punched Sergeant Scott Ranze several times in the face.
Williams was convicted of robbery last year and is serving a five year sentence.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time in the assault on the officer.
Ranze was at the State Capitol Tuesday protesting Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan to close state prisons and mental health facilities.
You can see he still has two blackened eyes.
He carried a sign that read "I was assaulted by an inmate, now Cuomo wants to give him a college education."
