CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Students from schools across the country and the world and put their skills to the test for "The New York Tech Valley Regional FIRST Robotics Competition" at RPI.

38 high school teams participated, some coming from as far away as Turkey to compete in the robotics tournament.

This was the first regional competition in the Capital Region.

The students had six weeks to design robots that could solve a problem.

Organizers say it's not only about the competition, it's about building student's interests for the future.

"Every one of these students can become a professional engineer so we see it as an incredible opportunity to do wonderful development and have a lot of fun along the way," said Elliot Masie, National FIRST Robotics Board of Directors Member.

"Seeing something that you spent six weeks creating, designing, building, and assembling and then after such a long wait, finally seeing it out on the field working and accomplishing this task, it's an absolutely incredible feeling," said Bethany Angeliu, senior at Shenendehowa HS.

About 2,700 teams are competing across the country and the goal is to make it the national championships in St. Louis.
