TROY, N.Y. -- Police in Florida confirm they have arrested Jesse Sawyer, Jr., a suspected child pornographer from Troy.
As of 3 p.m., Sawyer, 25, was in custody.
In an effort to find him, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department deployed a helicopter, while K-9 teams searched the nearby area. Authorities in Florida spent much of Friday conducting a manhunt-style search.
Authorities finally cornered Jesse Sawyer and arrested him in the parking lot of a strip mall.
Sawyer is accused of making pornography with at least three young girls, all ages 6 and younger, while he resided in Troy. Evidence of digital photos were brought forward to police by someone who knew Sawyer.
"The end result here is outstanding. Children are safe. The monster is off the streets,"
Troy police Capt. John Cooney said.
Early Friday morning, the 25-year-old was detained by Pinellas Park police, but was released back to his residence an 1 hour and 20 minutes later due to lack of a hard copy of the federal warrant, Cooney said.
Police officers in the United States are only allowed to detain a suspect for a limited amount of time with a warrant for arrest.
Cooney said his department worked with the FBI to fax the warrant to authorities in Florida. By the time Pinellas Park received the fax, they had already let Sawyer go. After returning to his residence to pick up Sawyer for a second time, he was no longer there.
"The FBI now has him in custody. They will have him face very serious federal charges. Take the penal law, sexual offenses and pick the worst ones, and Mr. Sawyer will probably be seeing every one of those on paper," Cooney said.
