NEW YORK STATE -- Showing their concern over oil transportation through New York State, environmental groups take to the Capitol.
The groups delivered a letter to the governor calling on him to direct the DEC to conduct an environmental impact review.
Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo issued an executive order in hopes of strengthening oversight of oil transportation to increase safety.
Still, many people are concerned about the environmental impact of a potential spill or accident.
Peter Iwanowicz, Executive Director of Environmental Advocates of New York said, "It shouldn't be shipped at all. You can certainly make the transport of tar sands oil safer but our point really is it shouldn't be extracted to begin with, it shouldn't be moved through New York. We shouldn't be aiding and abetting climate change and all that will come from extraction of this oil."
As part of his executive order, Cuomo requested a report on the state's ability to prevent and respond to accidents by April 30.
