For more than six decades a distribution company in Saratoga County has helped deliver our favorite drinks to the stores where we buy them. In this week's edition of the Capital Region Business Beat, our Jon Dougherty takes us inside DeCrescente Distributing Company.
MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. -- Inside more than 300,000 square feet of warehouse and office space in Mechanicville lies an endless supply of beer, soda, water and wine. There are more than 600,000 cases in stock at one time.
DeCrescente Distribution Company was founded in Mechanicville in 1948 by Angelo DeCrescente. At first there was only a single truck and the company was run out of his garage.
66 years later the company has continued to grow now delivering more than 10 million cases a year.
DeCrescente employees nearly 400 people. It services more than 4000 locations across 11 counties in the Capital Region.
"We're basically getting the product to the retail accounts," said Tom Turcotte, DeCrescente's V.P. of Operations. "Whether it's an on-premise account like bars, restaurants, those types of things. Or off-premise, the Price Chopper's/Walmart's of the world. Or it could be your small corner store, those types of places."
Many of the cases inside their warehouse read, "Drink Responsibly." But DeCrescente wants people to know they also "Drive Responsibly."
In 2013, DeCrescente teamed up with Cellcontrol, a tech company in Baltimore, MD that sells a software to cut down on distracted driving.
"We eliminate texts, emails, and inappropriate phone calls as well as inappropriate application use when somebody's in a vehicle," said Cellcontrol representative David Coleman.
In December, DeCrescente installed a system in all 75 of its delivery trucks that stops delivery drivers from using their cell phones while on the road.
Phones are synched up to the system and if you try and make a call or send a text the screen locks up.
DeCrescente said the response from drivers was positive.
"They didn't realize how often they were being distracted. They had no idea how often they were getting phone calls and texts," Turcotte said. "Now they stop, get a message that they had two missed calls, two missed texts and they can do what they need to do."
The company said since installing the system it believes it's made the roads they drive on safer.
DeCrescente was named the 2013 National Craft Beer Distributor of the Year by The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Brewers Association (BA) for actively marketing, selling and promoting craft beer.
Along with national beverage companies, DeCrescente works with many local breweries in Upstate New York.
"We turn around orders. We get them one day and we're delivering them the next. We're 24 hour turnaround and our central location helps us to do that," Turcotte said.
