MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- A fire at the GenPac International Food Packaging Plant was brought under control nearly two hours after it began.
Emergency officials say two large rolls of plastic caught on fire in a storage unit at the plant, triggering evacuations around the area. That includes the "Children's Corner Learning Center" and a Shoprite Supermarket.
With the heavy smoke from the fire and the possibility of toxic chemicals in the smoke, officials say the evacuations were precautionary.
"The smoke was blowing down that way, so I didn't want to put any fear in those guys. I wanted to get them out of there. And we cleaned all that out. So everything was good over there," said Chief Middletown Fire Department Tom Amodio.
The chief says some minor injuries have been reported.
