CORNWALL, N.Y. -- A local Cornwall student is vying for a chance to become the nation's top speller when the Scripps National Spelling Bee begins Tuesday.

Michael James, 14, is an eighth grade student Cornwall Central Middle School, and will be participating in the spelling be for the second year in a row.

The competition begins Tuesday in Washington, D.C. with the computer-based preliminaries. The final contestants will face off in the semi-final round on Thursday, follows by the championship later that night.
