PALENVILLE, N.Y. -- A New York state parole officer wanted in connection with a double murder, led police on a chase up Interstate 81 Monday morning, only to take his own life.

State police said 46-year old Robert Mroczek shot and killed his estranged wife and her boyfriend yesterday, at his home just south of Albany.

His car was spotted on I-81 North in the town of Chenango around 1 a.m. Monday. Police tried pulling him over, but Mroczek took off, leading troopers on a chase at speeds topping 100 miles per hour.

Mroczek made it about 30 miles north, into Cortland County, before finally going off the road.

"Ultimately the pursuit ended by the deployment of stop sticks, which forced Mroczek to leave the roadway. As troopers approached the vehicle, they discovered Mroczek deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Maj. Patrick Regan.

Police said Mroczek's estranged wife Pammi Mroczek did not live at the home where the shooting happened. They believe she may have been gathering some personal belongings at the time and wasn't aware that he would be there.

Near that home on Pennsylvania Avenue in Palenville, state police lingered at the site of the shooting Monday afternoon. The shots echoed through the typically quiet neighborhood Sunday afternoon.

"My son heard the shots actually. But, around here people target shoot so, we didn't think much of it," said Jeanne McTeigue.

The shots didn't shock McTeigue, but, she says it was the news of the victims that caught her by surprise.

"They were a really nice couple. Nothing unusual," she said.

Police said they found the body of McTeigue's longtime neighbor, Pammi Mroczek, inside the home. The body of Mroczek's boyfriend, Daniel Brennan, was found on the driveway.
Both had multiple gunshot wounds. Police say the man who pulled the trigger was Pammi's estranged husband, Robert.

"It's really strange to have something like that happen four doors down," said McTeigue.

Though McTeigue said she didn't notice the couple having marital problems, police say Mroczeks haven't been living together for some time.

"I guess anybody who was feeling what he was feeling and going through what he was going through with his marriage. I guess he snapped. It's hard to know," McTeigue said.
