SARATOGA RACE COURSE -- The New York Racing Association brings back a Travers week tradition, as the racing community prepares to honor last year's winners of the Midsummer Derby.
Thursday night marks the 14th Annual Travers Celebration, an event NYRA hasn't hosted for several years.
Over time, the cocktail reception and formal dinner has raised more than $1 million for Capital Region non-profits.
The connection's of last year's winner, Will Take Charge, will be honored, including Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
The 2013 victory marked the 73-year-old's third in the Midsummer Derby.
"He's been the mentor for so many trainers, and yet, he still finds a way to beat them. It's really a great story and D. Wayne has a sense of humor like nobody else, he has a quick needle, he's just fun to be around. I know it's going to be a great evening," said NYRA President and CEO Chris Kay.
Last year's winning owner, trainer and jockey will receive a mini replica of the Travers canoe.
