The late 2013 Thanksgiving holiday resulted in lost opportunities for Salvation Army branches nationwide. YNN's Geoff Redick reports.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady Salvation Army tells YNN it is $21,000 behind on its holiday fundraising, compared to this time last year. The organization blames the shortfall on this year's Thanksgiving holiday, which fell on the latest possible calendar date.

Most retail partners do not allow the Salvation Army to put out red kettles until after Thanksgiving. Because of that, the Salvation Army says it lost six days of bell ringing.

"We'll help people by hook or by crook," said Salvation Army Major Mike Heims of the fundraising woes. "We'll help them one way or another, but it will have an impact on our financial picture if we don't raise those funds during this holiday season."

Nationwide, some Salvation Army branches report being as much as 50 percent off their previous years fundraising pace.
