DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- In order to relieve overcrowding issues at the Dutchess County Jail, County Executive Marc Molinaro has given several recommendations to the county's legislature to purchase land adjacent to the jail.
The more than 4.5 acres is currently owned by the Parker Hamilton Corporation which uses the site as Taylor Manufacturing.
According to Molinaro, the company has plans to move to another location within the county and has agreed to sell the land for around $1.5 million.
He said he believes it’s the county’s last chance for a low-priced resolution.
“If Dutchess County wants to cut costs and return tax dollars to its residents we’ve got to confront the over 8 million dollars we spend in housing out. This is our last opportunity for a reasonable solution that will cut costs, improve the criminal justice system and allow us to return tax dollars to tax payers,” Molinaro said.
The County Legislature will consider funding for the purchase at its board meeting on Monday night.
