LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Wednesday is National Walking Day, and it's all part of the effort to get Americans moving. It could be walking, running, rollerblading, or any type of exercise.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week for adults, or 30 minutes per day for five days. According to experts, this is the perfect time of year to start getting into shape.

Research shows physical activity can relieve tension, anxiety, depression, and anger. It can also help to lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk for heart disease. The AHA is using the day as a tool to remind Americans to get moving, and encourage others to join you.

"We've studied people who exercise, and you're more likely to stick to a regime, if you've got a partner, because you're going to feel guilty if you leave the partner stranded, but it's also good to have some company when you're out there on the roads," said Kathy Garofalo, chair of the Central New York American Heart Association.

You're encouraged to sign up and take AHA's pledge, and sign your company or organization up to start walking today.

If you're active on Twitter you're encouraged to take a picture of your sneakers, or red laces and tweet with the hashtag #AHALaceUp to encourage others to get moving today.
