COLONIE, N.Y. -- New York National Guard and Capital Region runners and military supporters join in the sixth annual Hometown Heroes Run Saturday at the Crossings in Colonie.
The 5K run is a fundraiser sponsored by the New York National Guard Family Readiness Council. Money raised benefits the families of National Guard service members across the state.
Unlike active duty military members, members of the National Guard do not live on or near military bases that can give support services to families during periods of separation. The Council helps families financially during these times.
"The thing is just to thank everyone in the communities for supporting the National Guard. I know we are a little different than the active components, so we really appreciate the support that we receive in the communities," said Cherie Murphy, President of the NY National Guard Family Readiness Council.
The run draws donations and support from runners, local veterans' organizations and local businesses.
