NEW YORK STATE -- Casino gambling is one step closer to coming to our region. Governor Andrew Cuomo approved the enabling legislation that would allow for up to four casinos north of the New York City, in the Capital Region, the Catskills and the Southern Tier. It also calls for the construction of two video lottery parlors on Long Island.

The measure comes after the Governor reached agreements with the state’s American Indian tribes that created exclusivity zones for their casinos.

The casino legislation was one of the more contentious issues in the legislative session as lawmakers sought greater control over where the casinos would be built.

Ultimately, the casino siting will be determined by the state Gaming Commission with a panel appointed by the governor’s office, legislative leaders and the comptroller’s and attorney general’s offices.

The next hurdle to the building of casinos comes this fall, when voters can decide the fate of table top gambling through a constitutional referendum. That will be on the ballot this fall.
