A few injured New York Yankees players are slowly making their way back onto the field, but none are more eagerly anticipated than the captain, Derek Jeter. Our Kevin Garrity has more from Tampa.

TAMPA, FL -- 15 cameras and a throng of reporters awaited Derek Jeter as he held his first press conference of spring training. The big question on everyone's mind, "Will the captain be ready for Opening Day?"

"Why wouldn't It be realistic? I mean I broke my ankle back in October. So it's had time to heal. It will take a lot of work but I'll be ready," said Derek Jeter, the Yankees Captain.

"I would never count him out that's for sure. You never bet against him. He's an all-star player and future hall of famer so your not gonna bet against him," said Mark Teixeira, Yankees First Baseman.

After Jeter broke his ankle, he said the worst thing was watching his team lose to the Tigers and then the weeks spent out of action after his surgery

"Physically it was tough because you have to learn how to walk again and then mentally it was a challenge because you're on the couch and you can't get anywhere," said Jeter.

Jeter played through a bruised ankle at the end of last season and that may have led to the break. But as he looks back at that situation, he has no regrets.

"If you can play you play. I don't think you talk about injuries because then its an excuse. I was told I could play so I did and I would do the same thing over again," said Jeter.

The Yankees' captain has a lot of work ahead and he said don't expect to see him in game action until about three weeks into the spring training schedule.
